Lot # 323
Egypt, Alexandria. Gallienus 253-268. Tetradrachm (Billon, 23.05 mm, 11.59 g). Dated RY 8 (of Valerianus I and 1 of Gallienus ruling on his own) = AD 260/1. AY TK Π ΛIK ΓAΛΛIHNOCCЄB Laureate and cuirassed bust right; slight drapery on left shoulder. Rev. Laureate head of Zeus right; L HA (date) across fields. Dattari 5270 (this specimen). Emmett 3841 (4). Extremely rare. Extremely Fine. Ex Giovanni Dattari Collection 5270: obverse illustrated in Plate VI and reverse in plate XXV. Ex Dr. Piero Beretta, Milano. Ex Renzo Canavesi Collection, Sagno. Specimen bought in 1996. An extremely rare coin, in exceptional condition and also historically important because it marks the transition to the head of the empire from Valerian I, taken prisoner by Shapur I, after the lost battle of Edessa against the Sassanid Persians, who short after, deceased. It should be noted that the handcrafted portrait looks more like that of Valerian I than that of his son Gallienus.
