Egypt, Alexandria. Macrianus, usurper 260-261. Tetradrachm (Billon 23.22 mm, 11.43 g). Dated RY 1 = 260/1. A K T Φ IOYN MAKPIANOC Є CЄB Laureate and cuirassed bust of Macrianus right. Rev. Imperial eagle left with spread wings and a laurel wreath in beak; L A (date) in lower left field. Dattari 5380. BMC 2301. Emmett 3785. Coin of great condition and large diameter. Very Fine. Ex Numismatica Aretusa SA, Lugano, (Franco Chiesa). Specimen purchased in May 1988. Macrianus and his brother Quietus were usurpers of Gallienus in the East at the time of the defeat of Valerian I at Edessa, who had been taken prisoner by the Sassanids. In fact, the two brothers took possession of Alexandria and the mint from September 260 to June 261, when they were overwhelmed and killed: Macrianus by Gallienus' armies in Thrace and Quietus by those of Odenatus of Palmyra in the East.
