Macrianus and his brother Quietus were usurpers of Gallienus in the East at the time of the defeat of Valerian I at Edessa, who had been taken prisoner by the Sassanids. In fact, the two brothers took possession of Alexandria and the mint from September 260 to June 261, when they were overwhelmed and killed: Macrianus by Gallienus' armies in Thrace and Quietus by those of Odenatus of Palmyra in the East.
