Lot # 339
Egypt, Alexandria. Carinus 283-285. Tetradrachm. (Billon, 19.00 mm, 7.85 g). Dated RY 2 = AD 283/4. A K M A KAPINOC CЄΒ Laureate and cuirassed bust to right. Rev. Elpis advancing to left, wearing peplos and chiton, whose hem she is holding with her left hand and a lotus flower, with her left; a six-pointed star to right; L B (date) across fields. Geissen 3180. Dattari-Savio 5584. K&G 115.10 var. (no star). Emmett 4007. Very Fine. From the Vitangelo Collection. Ex Roma Numismatics Ltd., Auction 259, 13.04.2022, lot 741. It seems that Elpis, the Hope, which we do not often find on Alexandrian coins, was an important element of the harmony (Homonoia) between the August brothers Carinus and Numerian during the troubled and warlike period of their co-regency (283-284). According to Vogt (I, p. 221), the star on the reverse would indicate a specific mint workshop.
