Lot # 345
Egypt, Alexandria. Diocletian 284-305. Tetradrachm. (Billon, 19.00 mm, 7.28 g). Dated RY 12 = AD 295/6. ΔIOKΛHTIANOC CЄB Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. Laureate and draped bust of Zeus right; LIB (date) across fields. Dattari-Savio 5772.3. Emmett 4086. Rare, Good Very Fine. Ex Roma Numismatics Ltd., E-sale 63, 07.11.2019, lot 573. This rare and splendid tetradrachm was minted in the last year of the Alexandrian autonomous issues and immediately precedes the introduction of the controversial new global monetary and fiscal system imposed by Diocletian with the unit of the bronze ‘folles’ with Latin legend that triggered the social and political revolt of 296-98 AD led by the usurper Domitius Domitian that we find at no. 357 of this collection. The historiated complex of this fatal period has been reconstructed by Giovanni Maria Staffieri in his report to the thirteenth International Congress of Numismatics in Madrid entitled: “Testimonianze sulla fine della monetazione autonoma alessandrina (296-298 AD) " in "ACTAS XIII Congreso Internacional de Numismatica - Madrid 2003", pp. 1037-1043 (Plate I). On the reverse, the severe and solemn portrait of the Capitoline Zeus is a clear indication of the autocratic Roman-centric policy of the sovereign Diocletian "Jovius" (of Zeus).
