Lepontic was a Celtic dialect spoken in parts of Raetia and Cisalpine Gaul, particularly in the regions around Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, and Lake Como. It is attested both on coins and through a number of inscriptions written in the so-called ‘Lugano alphabet,’ a local script derived from the Etruscan alphabet and the most widely used writing system in pre-Roman Northern Italy.
