Lot # 607
France. Louis the Pious (814-840). Denier with portrait, nd (814-819). Dorestad. D. 413; MG 330; MEC I, 757 var. (and p. 213, class I). AR. 1.68 g. 19 mm. RR. Very rare. Slightly crystalized. About VF/VF. Dorestad was one of the three mints (Arles, Dorestad, and Quentovic) that had already struck portrait deniers under Charlemagne (768–814). Only twelve mints issued coins bearing the bust of Emperor Louis. While the obverse of these portrait issues of Louis the Pious—probably struck between 814 and 818—shows the ruler in paludamentum (general’s cloak) with a laurel crown, the reverses name the mint and symbolically indicate its “status.” Thus, the cities of Arles, Orléans, Pavia, Sens, Strasbourg, Toulouse, and Treviso display a city gate; the mining town of Melle is marked by a pair of dies; and the port cities of Quentovic and Dorestad are represented by a ship.
