DESCRIPTION
A historically significant commemorative Masonic medal issued during WWI in honour of H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught, Grand Master at the time.
Suspension & Ribbon
Original silk ribbon with central navy and flanking red stripes.
Suspended from a metal top bar engraved:
“25 JUNE 1917”
Long period-style pin mount to the rear.
Obverse
Struck in relief with a fine portrait of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, facing left.
The portrait is framed by a radiating petal-like border, giving the medal a crisp, sculptural appearance.
Reverse
Displays the full Coat of Arms supported by two robed figures.
Around the edge inscribed:
“H.R.H. THE DUKE OF CONNAUGHT M.W.G.M. 1917”
Lower panel shows the dual date:
“1717 – 1917”
marking the bicentenary of English Freemasonry.
Maker’s mark: SPENCER LONDON impressed at the bottom.
NOTES
This medal commemorates the 200th Anniversary (1717–1917) of the establishment of the first Grand Lodge in London, making it one of the most recognisable and desirable early 20th-century Masonic commemoratives. Spencer of London produced a range of very high-quality lodge jewels and medals throughout the 1910s–1930s.
