Freemasonry – Founder’s Jewel, Aurora Lodge No. 5768 (37.27 mm, 22.70 g).
Maker: Toye & Co. Ltd., London
Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1930s–1940s)
A beautifully crafted Founder’s Jewel for Aurora Lodge No. 5768, executed in sterling silver with exquisite hand-painted enamel and suspended from its original pale turquoise-blue ribbon. Founder jewels are among the most prestigious pieces of lodge regalia, awarded only to the establishing brethren at the consecration of a new lodge.
The gilt and blue enamelled upper suspension bar is inscribed:
FOUNDER
Below it, the ribbed ribbon is adorned with crossed golden arrows—a symbolic emblem often associated with direction, guidance, and unity in lodge foundation.
Obverse
The main jewel is a gilt silver starback surmounted by an arch motif. The blue enamel ring reads:
AURORA LODGE No. 5768
The central panel features a superb pictorial enamel scene:
A radiant sunrise (aurora) rising between classical pillars over a dark landscape, symbolising new beginnings, enlightenment, and the founding of the lodge. The colour saturation and detail are striking, characteristic of Toye’s high-end enamel work.
Reverse
The reverse is fully hallmarked:
Sterling silver (lion passant)
London assay (leopard’s head)
Date-letter (1930s–40s issue)
Maker’s mark: T & Co. (Toye & Co. Ltd.)
The backplate is shaped to the star form and includes the maker stamp TOYE & CO LTD, LONDON.
Condition: Very Fine. Ribbon lightly aged but intact; enamel scene exceptionally vivid with no major losses; gilt surfaces clean with mild patina; silver hallmarks strong; suspension fittings original and secure.
A highly desirable, colourful, and symbolically rich Founder’s Jewel, notable for its pictorial enamel sunrise—one of the most beautiful thematic designs seen on founder pieces. An excellent addition for collectors of early-mid 20th century Masonic regalia.
