Westhoughton Chapter No. 4215 – Founder Jewel, 1930 (30.44 mm, 25.98 g).
Maker: G.R. & S. (George R. Strange), London
Material: Hallmarked Sterling Silver (London, 1930 hallmarking year)
A handsome and richly symbolic Founder’s Jewel issued for the Westhoughton Chapter No. 4215 in 1930, crafted in gilt and multicoloured vitreous enamel and suspended from its original cream-coloured ribbed silk ribbon beneath a white-enameled FOUNDERS bar.
The upper ribbon is adorned with a gilt emblem of radiating rays and a superimposed triangle, signifying illumination and the aspirational ideals of the Chapter.
The main suspended jewel is formed around a six-pointed star motif, its border in red enamel punctuated with scrolling gilt ornament. Within the centre is a finely hand-painted enamel roundel depicting a pastoral scene: a white bull’s head framed by garlands, with a stylised green landscape and distant hill. The upper blue enamel band reads WESTHOUGHTON, while the lower band gives the Chapter designation CHAPTER No. 4215.
Reverse
The reverse bears the maker’s mark G.R.&S., accompanied by full London sterling silver hallmarks, with date-letter corresponding to 1930. A securing pin and hinge remain intact.
Condition: Very Fine. Enamel vivid and free of major loss; gilt detailing well preserved with light age toning; ribbon showing minor handling folds but original and stable; reverse with expected surface wear from age and use.
A Collectible Jewel
A desirable Founder jewel from the inter-war period, displaying superior enamel work and a distinctive pastoral emblem unique to this Chapter. An attractive addition to collections of Royal Arch and Chapter regalia.
