Lot # 202
Africa. Ethiopia, Aksum. Anonymous. Gold-Inlaid AE Unit, c. 440-470. D/ Greek legend. Crowned bust right, holding cruciform scepter. R/ TOYTOΛPECHTHXѠPΛ. Greek cross within circle, central element with gold inlay. Hahn, Aksumite 36.2; Hahn & Keck 45; SACAM 283/320. AE. 0.81 g. 15 mm. Good Fine. The reverse bears the remarkable legend “May this be pleasing to the people,” a formula that, in the Christian issues of Aksum, may be understood as referring to the Cross itself. More than a monetary device, the type expresses the spiritual transformation of the kingdom under its Christian rulers, presenting the Cross not only as a symbol of faith but as a divinely sanctioned emblem offered to, and embraced by, the nation.
