Africa. Ethiopia, Aksum. Armah. AE Unit, c. 540-550. D/ Crowned and draped full-length figure, enthroned right, holding cruciform scepter; Ge'ez legend 'King Armah' around. R/ Openwork cross with central gilding connected to ring by stem; wheat stalks emerging from ring; Ge'ez legend 'let there be joy to the peoples' around. Hahn, Aksumite 72a; Hahn & Keck 72; SACAM 569. 1.32 g. 20 mm. About VF. Armah, the last Axumite ruler to strike coinage, is uniquely distinguished as the only king to portray himself enthroned. With the sole exception of a unique gold issue of MHDYS (Munro-Hay type 67), this represents the only Axumite coin type bearing a full-length depiction of the monarch. As such, it constitutes an exceptionally rare and historically significant emission, marking the final phase of Axumite numismatic production and offering remarkable insight into late royal iconography.
