In the 5th century B.C., metal valued by weight in Rome was based on the libra system, as attested by references to payments and fines in Livy. These transactions involved unworked bronze, either in amorphous lumps or in ingot form. The use of aes rude is also well documented in Italic and Etruscan contexts through archaeological finds dating from the 10th to the 4th century B.C. Regular bronze and silver coinage was not firmly established until the late 4th century B.C., following the monetary model and weight standard of Neapolis. As a result, these early struck issues are conventionally known as the “Romano-Campanian” series.
