Sickle Series. AR Early Denarius (previously known as Didrachm), uncertain Campanian mint, 263 BC (?). D/ Helmeted head of beardless Mars right. R/ Head of horse right; behind, sickle; below, ROMA. RRSC E7; Cr. 25/1; HN Italy 297. AR. 6.64 g. 20.5 mm. RR. Nice example of sound metal and well impressed. Light golden tone; residual blackish spots. About EF. The symbol sickle is written in Greek as zankle, which was the Greek name of Messana. This coinage may refer to the triumph of M. Valerius Maximus Messalla in 263 BC over Hieron and the Carthaginians, fought in support of the Mamertini. The cognomen Messalla is traditionally connected with this event. (From RRSC Vol. 1).
