Greek Italy. Southern Apulia, Tarentum. AR Nomos, c. 490-480 BC. D/ TAPAΣ. Taras astride dolphin to right, holding octopus in his right hand and extending left hand. R/ TAPAΣ. Hippocamp swimming to right, scallop shell below, incuse radiating border around. Fischer-Bossert 48 (V21/R38); HN Italy 827; Vlasto 105 (same dies); HGC 1 753. AR. 7.78 g. 20 mm. R. Very rare. Superb example of late Archaic style; slightly rough surfaces, otherwise. VF/Good VF.
