The two Pannoniae standing facing, each with heads turned outward and left arm outstretched, the latter holding signum; between them, S; in exergue, XXIΓ. Venèra 4399-4400; RIC V 4. BI. 3.11 g. 22 mm. RR. Smoothed and tooled details. Very rare. VF. There was probably more than one usurper with the same name during that period who rebelled against Carinus or Maximianus. Numismatics still provides an important source of information, as it confirms the existence of at least one of them. Julian was in fact a governor of Northern Italy who, upon the death of Emperor Carus and then Numerian, started a revolt in Pannonia. He struck coins in Siscia celebrating the Pannonian provinces, as demonstrated by this specimen.
However, his reign was short-lived because Carinus, Numerian's brother, soon left Britain to confront the usurper, defeating and killing him in 285 in an unknown location.
