Very rare and superb example for type, with an expressive portrait. EF. Flavius Eugenius, closely associated with the magister militum Arbogast and supported by the Frankish tribes, was proclaimed augustus of the West in 392 in Lugdunum upon the death of Valentinian II. However, his colleague in the East, Theodosius I, did not recognize him, and he was therefore considered a usurper. Eugenius was previously known as a teacher of Latin grammar and rhetoric, then held the position of magister criniorum (head of the chancellery).
He arrived in Rome in 393 and, despite being a Christian, adopted a tolerant policy towards pagans, allowing the reopening of the temple of Venus, the restoration of the altar of Victory, and the celebration of pagan religious festivities. This attitude was in clear contrast to Theodosius' policy and also created tensions with the powerful bishop of Milan, Ambrose. A conflict soon followed, and Theodosius defeated the army commanded by Arbogast in 394 in the Battle of the Frigidus. Eugenius was put to death by beheading as a traitor.
