This designation was given by Greek settlers, likely from Syracuse in the 4th century BC, in reference to the distinctive shape of the promontory on which the city stands. The headland projects into the Adriatic Sea, forming a pronounced natural bay that resembles the bend of an arm. This geographical feature provided a well-sheltered harbor, making Ancona an important maritime site since antiquity. The city’s name thus directly reflects its physical and topographical character.
