SALONINA (Augusta, 254-268). Antoninianus. Mediolanum.

Obv: SALONINA AVG.
Diademed and draped bust right, set on crescent.
Rev: AVGVSTA IN PACE / P.
Salonina seated left, holding branch and sceptre.

MIR 1234a; RIC 60.

This coin bears the intriguing and unusual legend AVGVSTA IN PACE, a formula that has often been interpreted as evidence that Salonina might have converted to Christianity. Some scholars, however, point out that Salonina was traditionally associated with the goddess Pax, and Alföldi emphasizes that this issue played an important role in the broader peace‑propaganda campaign launched by Gallienus on his own coinage. In this light, the inscription is less a sign of religious conversion and more a reflection of the imperial message of harmony and stability that the regime sought to project during a turbulent period.
