The lighthouse of Messina with statue of Neptune, holding trident and rudder, foot set on prow; in foreground, galley advancing left, with aquila on prow, sceptre and trident on stern.Rev: PRAEF CLAS ET ORAE MARIT (EX) S C. Skylla left, preparing to strike with rudder; her lower body consists of two fish tails and three foreparts of dog.Crawford 511/4a-c.This denarius was issued by Sextus Pompeius, son of Pompey the Great. In 44 BC in Spain he was appointed 'praefectus classis et orae maritimae' (=commander of the fleet and sea coast), but after a few months his title was revoked and he was proscribed. Sextus Pompey therefore sailed from Marseilles to Sicily, where he blocked supplies to Italy and took in more proscribed men. Octavian sent against him a naval fleet commanded by Q. Salvidienus Rufus, but it was defeated. With this victory, Sextus Pompey claimed the title 'imperator iterum' (=twice victorious commander) that appears on the coin's obverse legend. The lighthouse of Messina appearing on the obverse, a monument still standing today, recalls the victory achieved over Salvidienus in Sicilian waters. Scylla, a sea monster depicted with a human torso while wielding a rudder, metaphorically alludes to Sextus Pompey destroying Octavian's ships. Condition: Very fine.Weight: 3.81 g. Diameter: 19 mm.

Shrine of Venus Cloacina: Circular platform surmounted by two statues of the goddess, each with hand upon cippus.Crawford 494/43a; CRI 189; RBW 1747.The small temple of Venus Cloacina was linked to the Cloaca Maxima, which in this area headed toward the Roman Forum, built on the Via Sacra near the area of the Tabernae Novae. The shrine was dedicated to Venus protector of the Cloaca Maxima, the most important of ancient Rome's sewers. The deity was identified as the Goddess Cloacina, of Etruscan origin; after all, it was the Etruscans who taught the Romans about swamp draining and sewers. According to others, however, the nickname Cloacina comes from 'cluere' (=purify), for the ceremony used by Romans and Sabines in reconciling, purifying themselves of the blood they had shed among themselves. On this coin we see a small open-air shrine with a low circular enclosure that contained two cult statues, probably depicting ancient Cloacina and Venus, which eventually merged into Venus Cloacina. Elephant advancing right, trampling upon horned serpent.Rev: Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis and apex.Crawford 443/1; CRI 9; RBW 1557.With the beginning of the Civil Wars, this is the first coin issued in open defiance of the Senate, bearing the name of a private individual. There is no agreement on the place of issue, Crawford attributes it to an itinerant mint. According to D. Van Meter (The Hanbook of Roman Imperial Coins) the coin, was minted in 49-48 to finance the invasion of Italy, the allegory would refer to the salvation of the Republic (the snake/dragon), crushed by Metellus Scipio (whose gens had an elephant depicted on their coins). It is generally believed that it is a dragon that is trampled upon; the African elephant would not only allude to the victory against Ariovistus in 58 BC (the dragon was on the banner of the Germans) but also to the name of Caesar, who discovered the existence of a homograph word for elephant in the Mauri' language in Mauretania. Religious emblems here depicted are symbols of priestly offices: the jug and the lituus representing the functions associated with the Pontefices and the Augures. Both ensure the legitimacy of all political action, ensuring the salvation of the Roman state through respect for the divine will. Caesar himself holds most of the religious offices and uses them for propaganda purposes in a new type of coin that emphasises his supreme authority. Condition: Extremely fine.Weight: 3.70 g.
