Lotto n. 578 - Cyprus. Henry II of Lusignan, Second Reign (1310-1324). AR Gros. D/ King seated on curule chair, with foreparts of lions at sides, his legs together, cloak fastened with brooch on right shoulder; holds scepter in right and crucifer globe in left hand; six-pointed star in left field. R/ Cross of Jerusalem. Malloy 58; Schl. pl. VI, 20; Metcalf 676/682. AR. 4.53 g. 26.5 mm. Cabinet tone. About EF.

Lotto n. 577 - Frankish Greece, Athens. Types in the name of the Duchy of Athens, possibly Florentine Dukes of Athens (1388-1394). AE Denier tournois. D/ Patent cross. R/ Castle tournois. Cf. Seltman, in Mints, XXII, 10; Malloy 107; Schl. -. BI. 0.42 g. 18 mm. RR. Very rare and seldom offered. About VF/VF. This crude style denier seems to be a regular issue of the time instead of a contemporary forgery, as Lambros and Schlumberger considered them (many are the examples (97) located in British Museum from an hoard and many more are the examples in other collections). These typed might perhaps have been struck by Nerio Acciajuoli, the first Florentine duke of Athens (1388-1394), who conquered the duchy from his castle of Acrocorinth in Achaea. This would at least explain the unusual alloy and the hybrid combination. Regarding the legend unusually blundered and differently spaced noteworthy is the form DAX instead of DVX that might perhaps contain the initial of the duke Antonio I Acciajuoli (1402-1435), the most prosperous of his dynasty.

Lotto n. 576 - Frankish Greece, Achaea. Robert d'Anjou (de Taranto) (1333-1364). EL Ducat. Imitating Venezia. Uncertain mint (Chiarenza?). Struck in the name and types of Andrea Dandolo. D/ St. Mark standing right, holding Gospels and presenting banner to Doge kneeling left. In front of the Doge, pellet. R/ Christ standing facing, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels, surrounded by mandorla containing ten stars. Cf. Schl. p. 320; pl. XII, 34 and pl. XXI 19-22; Cf. Gamb. III 344. Lotto n. 575 - Jerusalem. Pilgrim Coinage. BI Denier. D/ Patent cross. R/ Patriarchal cross on concentric rectangles representing the mount of Golgotha, between stars and palm branches. Malloy 47; Schl. pl. XIX, 3; Metcalf 201. BI. 1.07 g. 22 mm. RRR. Flatness. Extremely rare. About VF. Metcalf identifies this type with the seals of the Masters of the Order of Saint John. Some authors believe this piece belongs to a royal or patriarchal celebrative issue.

Ex Artemide LX, 2023, lot 707.  Templar, or simply the Templars, was a military order of the Catholic faith, and one of the wealthiest and most popular military orders in Western Christianity. They were founded c. 1119, headquartered on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, and existed for nearly two centuries during the Middle Ages. Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church by such decrees as the papal bull Omne datum optimum of Pope Innocent II, the Templars became a favored charity throughout Christendom and grew rapidly in membership and power. The Templar knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades. They were prominent in Christian finance; non-combatant members of the order, who made up as much as 90% of their members, managed a large economic infrastructure throughout Christendom. They developed innovative financial techniques that were an early form of banking, building a network of nearly 1,000 commanderies and fortifications across Europe and the Holy Land, and arguably forming one of the world's earliest multinational corporations.

Lotto n. 63 - Colonie Genovesi. Foglia Vecchia (Phocaea). Dorino Gattilusio (1400-1449), Signore di Chio, Lesbo e delle Due Focee. Ducato in oro al tipo di quello veneziano. Obv. San Marco nimbato, stante a sinistra, porge il vessillo al sovrano genuflesso (Dorino (?)). Rev. Il Redentore stante di fronte entro aureola ellittica cosparsa di stelle. Schl. pl. Aree di appiattimento da coniazione. Bel BB.I Gattilusio, di origine genovese, furono signori dell'isola di Lesbo dal 1355 per concessione di Giovanni V Paleologo. Nel 1403 Dorino ricevette da suo fratello maggiore Jacopo il dominio sulla città di Focea Vecchia, sulla costa dell'Asia Minore, che suo padre aveva ottenuto tramite un contratto dalla La Maona a partire dal 1402.
