Lot # 393 - M. Junius Brutus. AR Denarius, 54 BC. Obv. BRVTVS Head of L. Junius Brutus the Ancient right. Rev. AHALA. Head of C. Servilius Ahala right. Cr. 433/2; B. 30; RRSC D 225.2. AR. 4.11 g. 18.60 mm. Scarce. Full weight. An outstanding example of this fascinating issue. Good EF. Denarius struck in 54 BC by Caepio Brutus, better known as M. Junius Brutus, one of the leaders in the conspiracy that assassinated Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The types are records of his ancestry. Lucius Junius Brutus was a semilegendary figure, held to have ousted the despotic Etruscan king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus from Rome in 509 BC and then to have founded the Roman Republic. Gaius Servilius Ahala was celebrated in Roman tradition as a hero who freed his country from the threat of tyranny by killing Sp. Maelius in 439 BC.

Heavy example, lightly toned with underlying luster. EF.
Lot # 391 - A. Plautius. AR Denarius, 55 BC. Obv. A. PLAVTIVS AED. CVR. [S.C] Turreted head of Cybele right. Rev. Bacchius kneels right, with camel at his side, extending olive branch; in exergue, BACCHIVS; on right, IVDAEVS. Cr. 431/1; B. 13; RRSC D 223. AR. 4.01 g. 17.50 mm. Scarce. Sound metal and full weight. Choice and brilliant. Slightly off-center. About EF. Bacchius, unknown to history under that name at least, might be Aristobulos II of Jerusalem (who submitted to Pompey) or Dionysios of Tripolis.

Warrior on horseback thrusting his spear at Gaulish enemy who is about to slay unarmed captive; on right, helmet and oval shield. Cr. 429/1; B. (Fonteia) 17; RRSC D 221.1. AR. 3.86 g. 18.50 mm.
