The medal refers to the humility of the Pope who, in spite of the cardinals’ wishes, refused to wear the tiara for three days. Ermenegildo Hamerani minted this medal at the age of seventeen.

Beatrice Hamerani (1679-1704) daughter of Giovanni Martino Hamerani and sister of Ermenegildo, was a medalist and worked on wax. She produced some medals, including this one, now considered very rare and this specimen is one of the best known and the sole with a complete signature. The reverse allegory of the medal can be found on some coins of this Pope who was called the father of the poor.

Urban VIII, concerned about the wars pervading Italy and Europe, thought of strengthening the papal army by identifying a place to set up the armoury so that weapons could be easily reached by soldiers in case of fighting within the walls. For this purpose, some rooms under the Library were converted. This medal was the last "annual" executed by Gaspare Mola, as he died in January 1640.

This medal is a remake of the specimen coined by Michele Angelo Balla (Modesti IV, 897), executed about a century later. It shows therefore the same representations, but a slightly larger diameter. Moreover the date on the obverse is in Roman numerals and the small mountain under the candelabrum is different. Given the characteristics, the shape of the edges and the images reported by early scholars of papal medals, the coinage of these specimens should have been redone towards the end of the 17th century by Hamerani engravers (cf. A. Modesti).

Lot # 929 - Matteo Renato Ildefonso Rea (1896-1971), Abate di Montecassino e Vescovo. Medaglia 1965 per la ricostruzione dell'Abbazia di Montecassino. D/ ILDEFONSVS REA EP TIT CORONENSIS. Busto a sinistra in abito vescovile; sotto, AN MCMLXV. R/ ABBAS ET ORDINARIVS MONTIS CASINI Stemma del Vescovo. AE. 350.8 g. 102.5 mm. RRR. Rarissima. SPL. Il 15 febbraio 1944, la millenaria abbazia cassinese fu rasa al suolo in seguito ai bombardamenti aerei degli alleati. Il primo ad accorrervi, appena cessato il combattimento, fu l'abate Rea, che il 27 maggio 1944 raggiunse con mezzi militari degli Alleati la vetta di Montecassino. Qui trovò le truppe polacche che avevano occupato il terreno dove una volta esisteva l'Abbazia. Immediatamente scrisse alla Segreteria di Stato della Santa Sede informandola sulle condizioni in cui si trovava l'antico monastero, ossia la completa distruzione dell'edificio. Lasciò poi a custodia dei sacri luoghi un suo monaco. Il 24 novembre del 1945, l'abate Rea, dopo sedici mesi di lotta, dovette inchinarsi alla volontà del papa Pio XII che lo volle trasferito a Montecassino per intraprendere la gigantesca opera di riedificazione dell'abbazia. Prese possesso della carica l'8 settembre 1945. L'Abate seguì con intelligenza e competenza la ricostruzione della monumentale abbazia cassinese. La prima pietra fu posata il 15 marzo 1945, che fu poi seguita da un suo appello radiofonico (15 febbraio 1946) con il quale chiedeva aiuto agli italiani per l'opera appena intrapresa. I lavori, ispirati al principio dov'era e com'era, iniziarono effettivamente il 1º aprile 1949. Il 24 ottobre 1964, il papa Paolo VI, consacrò la rinata Abbazia di Montecassino.

Nell'agosto del 1939, mentre più assillanti si facevano i timori di una guerra sanguinosa, da Castelgandolfo si elevò drammatica la voce di Pio XII: 'Nulla è perduto con la pace, tutto può essere perduto con la guerra'. Nel settembre successivo le truppe di Hitler varcavano la frontiera polacca e davano inizio alla seconda guerra mondiale.

Gli avvenimenti politici avevano impedito a Pio IX di celebrare degnamente i Giubilei del 1850 e del 1875; infatti il papa dovette limitarsi alla semplice concessione delle indulgenze, rinunciando ad ogni manifestazione esteriore e perfino all'apertura della Porta Santa. Leone XIII che da allievo del Collegio Romano aveva partecipato all'apertura dell'Anno Santo del 1825 presieduta da Leone XII, a 75 anni di distanza potè finalmente promulgare il nuovo 'Perdono' con la bolla Properante ad exitum saeculo. Con l'Enciclica Annum Sacrum del 25 maggio 1899 invitava i fedeli ad una nuova preparazione cattolica al Giubileo e con l'altra, Tumetsi futura, del 1° novembre 1900, consacrava il nuovo secolo al Redentore. Anche se il clima politico continuava a non essere del tutto tranquillo molti furono i pellegrini ad accorrere a Roma (circa 500.000 ) e il Giubileo a cui la medaglia si riferisce, nel suo complesso, fu degno di tradizione.

La raffigurazione del rovescio ben si addice alla figura di Innocenzo XI, il quale, durante tutta la sua vita da religioso, non fece mancare opere di carità nei confronti dei più bisognosi. Il rigore morale e la forte volontà di porre un freno alla decadenza dei costumi e al lusso che si ostentava a Roma portarono anche molte critiche da parte dei nobili che temevano di perdere l'antico splendore. Proprio nella scelta del rovescio della medaglia del decimo anno di pontificato che raffigura l'allegoria della Carità intenta a soccorrere due fanciulli possiamo vedere la conferma dell'atteggiamento del Pontefice.

R/ LIBERALITAS PONTIFICIA. La figura allegorica della Liberalità (Munificenza) nell'atto di versare delle monete da una cornucopia sopra dei simboli ecclesiastici, dei libri e degli strumenti rappresentanti le arti e la musica; in esergo, un ramoscello d'alloro ed un altro di palma incrociati. Nel cuore antico della città, la grandiosa fabbrica del palazzo di San Marco nel XV secolo accentrò su di sè tutta l'energia, la volontà e le spese del cardinale titolare di San Marco, il veneziano Pietro Barbo, futuro papa Paolo II. L'edificio inglobava la basilica di San Marco che appare come chiesa palatina derivata dall'antico esempio della basilica di San Marco a Venezia collegata al palazzo Ducale, mettendo in evidenza la relazione fra il palazzo veneziano e il palazzo romano di San Marco. Una torre alta e massiccia coronava il palazzo e, nel progetto originario, a essa doveva far riscontro un'altra torre identica che non venne realizzata nonostante fosse rappresentata nelle medaglie commemorative dei lavori datate 1455 e 1465. Queste medaglie, decorate con l'effigie dapprima di Pietro Barbo, poi di Paolo II, erano state incorporate alla struttura muraria del nuovo edificio in segno di attestazione di offerta fondativa.
