Following the suppression of the Jesuit College in Vienna, the adjoining numismatic cabinet was incorporated into the imperial collection. The former curator, Abbot Eckhel, moved in with the coins and was appointed curator of ancient coins of the Imperial Coin Cabinet in March 1774. Printed at the author's own expense, this first numismatic work is divided into two parts. The first part (pp. 1-162) is devoted to ancient coins minted in Europe, arranged clockwise from Hispania and Gaul to the Greek islands; the second part (pp. 165-318) concerns specimens minted in Asia and Africa, arranged clockwise from Pontus to Egypt; in addition, some indeterminate specimens are described, as well as some Republican, Imperial and Byzantine Roman.gr. 912

With his monumental Doctrina numorum veterum Eckhel affirmed a new orientation to the discipline, following in the description of coins not the alphabetical order by city, but the geographical order of Strabo, laying the foundations for the modern cataloguing of ancient numismatics still adopted today. gr. 278

The only edition of a comprehensive and profound treatise on the coins of the kingdom of Osroen (Upper Mesopotamia) and its capital Edessa, composed by the multifaceted German professor of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1726-1737). This text was the first numismatic work printed in Russia. The volume provides the complete history up to 1400 of the city of Edessa, now called Urfa, in the southeast of Turkey. Under the Roman Empire it became a province and at the fall of the Empire, the city was claimed by both the Persians and the Byzantines, and then conquered by the Arabs. It was later ruled by the Franks and later became part of the Ottoman Empire. The coins depicted in the text date from the period of the independent kingdom.gr. 1016
