The decadrachm of Syracuse is one of the most impressive and celebrated silver denominations of classical times, and remains one of the most fascinating masterpieces in numismatic history. With its large module, this coin offered the engravers of Syracuse ample room to express their mastery. After a brief experimental issue in the 460s BC, the decadrachm was reintroduced under the tyrant Dionysius I in 405 BC, marking an ambitious attempt to elevate Syracuse to the capital of the Greek world. Two of the most distinguished local numismatic artists, Kimon and Euainetos, were responsible for creating the coinage for this series, each infusing their own distinctive style into the well-known emblems of Syracuse. The obverse of the coin depicts a quadriga, a four-horse chariot, triumphing in the race, while the reverse shows the head of the beautiful Arethusa, nymph of the spring of Ortygia, surrounded by dolphins. Both engravers were so proud of their work that they signed their coinage, similar to the practice of modern artists. Some of the decadrachm coinage features symbols, such as a shell, in place of the signature, suggesting the involvement of apprentices who emulated the work of the masters.

Good VF. The coinage of Naxos provides a valuable insight into the evolution of Greek artistic style on coinage up to 400 B.C. Its four major issues showcase distinct artistic phases in a uniquely concentrated manner. The first issue is fully Archaic, the second, attributed to the Aetna Master, blends late Archaic and early Classical elements, the third is purely Classical, and the fourth presents a new interpretation of Dionysus as a youthful, effeminate figure with his hair tied in a bun. The early depiction of Dionysus on this coin is a remarkable example of Archaic male portraiture, closely resembling Athenian Black Figure pottery from 575–525 B.C. The engraver likely drew inspiration from such works while intentionally preserving an archaizing style, despite the rise of naturalism in Greek art. The reverse design is striking in its balance and simplicity, featuring a detailed grape cluster complemented by vine leaves rendered in outline, adding a unique artistic contrast.

The minting of these impressive tetradrachms, the finest series struck, lasted only until 405 BC, as the mint ceased operations when the city’s inhabitants were evacuated to Syracuse before the destruction of the city due to the Carthaginians.
