Zeus standing right, holding labrys and sceptre.SNG Copenhagen 596-7; SNG von Aulock 2375-6; HN Online 241.The importance of Halikarnassos grew with Artemisia I, the legendary queen who fought against the Persians at Cape Artemisium and Salamis, proving herself to be one of the few great generals to emerge with honor with Xerxes. The Ligdamid dynasty, to which Artemisia I belonged, ruled all of Caria and had Milas as its capital; the ancient city was the most important center of Caria, a situation that changed with the Ecatomnid dynasty. With the defeat at Salamis, the city came under the control of the Delian League, but was later reconquered by Tissaphernes and subsequently placed under the control of Hekatomnos. Hekatomnos had three sons, Maussolos, Hydrieus, and Pixodaros, and two daughters, Artemisia II and Ada, who married the first two brothers and ruled Caria for 50 years. Maussolos, in particular, greatly expanded the domains of his kingdom, extending them as far as Lydia, playing an important role in the revolt of Chios and Rhodes against the Second Delian League and, above all, moving the capital of Caria to Halikarnassos. Following his death, Artemisia II, his sister and wife, commissioned the construction of the legendary Mausoleum of Halikarnassos, which was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. After Artemisia came Idrieus, who completed the mausoleum and restored the temple of Zeus at Labraunda; he also supported the Persian reconquest of Cyprus, although it seems that relations with the Persians were very compromised. Upon Idrieus' death, the throne briefly passed to Ada, who was, however, driven out by Pixodaros. Unlike his predecessor, the youngest of the brothers was keen to ingratiate himself with the Persians, so much so that he gave his daughter in marriage to Orontobates, a Persian general. Actually, Pixodaros also had a great friendship with Philip III of Macedon, to the point that he offered his sister in marriage to him. When Pixodaros died, Orontobates took the throne but, thanks to Ada's support, he was overthrown by Alexander the Great who, in order to guarantee his succession to the throne of Caria, became Ada's adopted son. However, the siege carried out by the great Greek leader dealt a fatal blow to Halikarnassos, which never fully recovered from that moment onwards. Condition: Good very fine.Weight: 6.97 g.
