A female portrait of an unusually fine style, struck on fresh metal. Attractively toned with iridescence. Slightly off center on obverse, otherwise, Extremely Fine. Very Rare. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 30 September 2024, lot 210; Numismatica Ars Classica 25 May 2020, lot 165; iNumis 29, 2 June 2015, lot 32. In the Jenkins cataloging, the obverse O9 and O10 have no legend (sys) but symbols, ketos and swan respectively. The style of the reverses in this group is Late Classical Greek, but as so often it is difficult to point to any precise model. Anyway they certainly imitate the mintings of the best master engravers of Syracuse. The engraver of the dies used for the present coin was certainly a master himself, and unlike many of the rather stylised Punic issues, the naturalistic representation presented here is clearly the work of a superior artist.

These types will last, with variations in style, until the end of silver production (c. mid-1st century). In these issues the owl is surrounded by an olive wreath, which is why the tetradrachms are referred to in the inscriptions as "stephanephoroi" (= wreath bearers). This group's reverses exhibit a Late Classical Greek character, yet identifying a single exact influence is challenging. Nonetheless, they clearly echo the practice of Syracuse’s finest master engravers. The dies’ engraver for this coin was evidently a consummate craftsman, and, unlike many of the more stylized Punic issues, the naturalistic rendering here signals the hand of a superior artist.

Female head of nymph (or Tanit-Arethusa) left, wearing ampyx in hair, triple pendant earring and pearl necklace; no dolphins around; all within shallow circular incuse. Jenkins, SNR 50 (1971), pl. 12, 57 (O16/R46, this coin illustrated) = Viola CNP 300 (but not illustrated). Cf. HGC 2, 1020. Wonderful old cabinet tone. Slightly off-center on reverse and thin ancient scratch on the nymph's face, otherwise, Near Extremely Fine. Extremely Rare Variant (only one example known from this die pair). The only reference of Jenkins is in the Sambon-Canessa auction of 27-30 June 1927, lot 1144 (the coin for sale). Our search for this pair of dies in the consulted bibliography did not produce any further positive results. Ex Astarte V, 28 October 1999, lot 303; Sambon & Canessa, 27-30 June 1927, lot 1144. In the Jenkins cataloging, the obverse O16 of number 57 has no legend (sys) but only symbol two dolphins, while the reverse (off-center), does not appear to have any dolphin around it.
