Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm branch; star to left.RIC V online 3120.RareBehind the figure of Vaballatus stands the more prominent one of his mother Zenobia, who ruled the kingdom of Palmyra and decided to secede from the Roman Empire, declaring herself independent. Zenobia, who claimed to be descended from Cleopatra, first appears in sources in 258 as the second wife of Septimius Odaenathus, ruler of Palmyra. Since the heir to the throne was to be Herodianus, Odaenathus' first-born son, Zenobia instigated Meonius to kill first her husband and then her stepson. She later had Meonius executed as well and assumed the regency on behalf of her son Vaballatus, who was still an infant at the time. Given the political instability in Rome, Zenobia began to plan an autonomous kingdom that would unite different eastern populations. She conquered Arabia and Judea in a short time, then even managed to take over Egypt by taking advantage of the death of Claudius Gothicus. In 270 the queen assumed the title of Augusta and began minting coins in the name of her son Vaballatus. The new emperor Aurelian finally decided to intervene and headed east, achieving two important victories at Immae and Emesa, then laying siege to Palmyra. Zenobia relied too much on the city's food and water reserves and on the help that never arrived from the Persian king Shapur. She was therefore forced to surrender and was taken to Rome with her son and paraded as a prisoner in Aurelian's triumph in 274. Condition: Extremely fine.Weight: 3.68 g. Diameter: 20 mm.

Clasped hands.RIC² 482.Marius was emperor in Gaul for a short period in AD 269. He is listed among the Thirty Tyrants in the Historia Augusta. It seems that Marius was elected by the soldiers who had killed his predecessor Postumus, because he had not allowed them to sack the newly conquered city of Magontiacum (Mainz). Marius allowed the soldiers to loot in Moguntiacum, then moved the capital to Augusta Treverorum (Trier) as evidence of mints active there, such as the one in Moguntiacum which was probably moved to Colonia. After a few months of reign he was assassinated, the reason is not known. According to a late tradition, he was a blacksmith who made a rapid career in the Roman army, becoming an officer. After the death of Postumus, he held power for perhaps two or three days before being killed by a sword of his own making. But the story is unreliable because from the number of coins he minted, he must have reigned for at least twelve months. Condition: Extremely fine.Weight: 2.81 g. Diameter: 18 mm.

Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm frond.RIC² 472.Ulpius Cornelius Laelianus, also called Lollianus, reigned for only a few months, in 269 AD before being killed. He was a usurper of the Emperor of Gaul Postumus and is included in the list of Thirty Tyrants in the Historia Augusta, but little is known about his origins. Postumus was a commander of the Limes Germanicus who rebelled around 260 and proclaimed himself Augustus after killing the Caesar Saloninus, son of Gallienus. He had created an empire in Gaul with its own senate, consuls and praetorians, with a capital at Augusta Treverorum (Trier) and a mint at Lugdunum (Lyon), which Laelianus also used. In 268, one of Postumus's officers, Ulpius Cornelius Laelianus, rebelled against him by proclaiming himself Augustus in Mogontiacum, in Germania Superior, where the Legio XXII Primigenia was stationed, of which he probably was the commander. However, his rebellion lasted only two months, then he was beheaded, either by his own soldiers or by the soldiers of Postumus, who were besieging the capital. The siege of Mogontiacum was lethal for Postumus too. He was killed by his own soldiers for refusing to allow them to plunder the conquered city, and was immediately replaced by Marcus Aurelius Marius. Condition: Near extremely fine.Weight: 2.08 g.
