This type of sword forced the Romans to partially revise their equipment, especially during Trajan's campaigns in Dacia at the beginning of the 2nd century. The soldiers adopted segmented sleeves and reinforced helmet visors to defend themselves from the cutting blows inflicted by the falx. Trajan's Column: column surmounted by statue of Trajan left, with patera and sceptre, and set upon podium decorated with eagles.Woytek 425b; RIC 293.Trajan's Column, designed by the architect Apollodorus of Damascus, was inaugurated in 113 AD in Trajan's Forum to commemorate his victories in Dacia. It is one of the finest examples of Roman art that can still be admired today. The magnificent frieze, which winds its way upward along the entire shaft of the column, consists of a sequence of reliefs 180 meters long, featuring approximately 2,000 figures. The emperor appears in about 60 scenes depicting Trajan’s two military campaigns against the Dacians, led between 101-102 and 105-106 AD. The monument, made of Parian marble, rises 42 meters high. Originally, a statue of an eagle stood atop the column, but after Trajan’s death, it was replaced with a six-meter-tall gilded bronze statue of the emperor himself. (bust type).The reverse side of this sestertius refers to Trajan's conquest of Dacia. Despite the lack of money in the imperial treasury, Trajan managed to arm and supply an army to avenge the defeats suffered by Domitian. The aim was to conquer a territory rich in gold and silver mines to meet Rome's financial needs and limit the growing power of Decebalus along the imperial borders. Trajan had 150,000 soldiers at his disposal, including legionaries and auxiliaries, and led them across the Danube in 101, winning a crushing victory at the Battle of Tapae and forcing Decebalus to accept a restrictive peace treaty in 102. The second war (105-106) was triggered when Decebalus violated the agreements, pushing Trajan to attempt total conquest. The Romans built the famous Apollodorus Bridge over the Danube, captured the capital Sarmizegetusa Regia, and Decebalus committed suicide to avoid capture. Dacia became a Roman province and Trajan celebrated his victory by erecting the famous Trajan's Column. The reverse side of this sestertius shows a depiction of subjugated Dacia and the trophy commemorating the victory and the enormous spoils conquered and brought to Rome.
