Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm frond.RIC² 472.Ulpius Cornelius Laelianus, also called Lollianus, reigned for only a few months, in 269 AD before being killed. He was a usurper of the Emperor of Gaul Postumus and is included in the list of Thirty Tyrants in the Historia Augusta, but little is known about his origins. Postumus was a commander of the Limes Germanicus who rebelled around 260 and proclaimed himself Augustus after killing the Caesar Saloninus, son of Gallienus. He had created an empire in Gaul with its own senate, consuls and praetorians, with a capital at Augusta Treverorum (Trier) and a mint at Lugdunum (Lyon), which Laelianus also used. In 268, one of Postumus's officers, Ulpius Cornelius Laelianus, rebelled against him by proclaiming himself Augustus in Mogontiacum, in Germania Superior, where the Legio XXII Primigenia was stationed, of which he probably was the commander. However, his rebellion lasted only two months, then he was beheaded, either by his own soldiers or by the soldiers of Postumus, who were besieging the capital. The siege of Mogontiacum was lethal for Postumus too. He was killed by his own soldiers for refusing to allow them to plunder the conquered city, and was immediately replaced by Marcus Aurelius Marius. Condition: Good very fine.Weight: 2.94 g. Pax standing left, holding branch and transverse sceptre.RIC² 465 (R2).Aureulus first appears in the chronicles in Pannonia as a cavalry commander under the orders of the emperor Gallienus. Apparently a Dacian native from Sirmium, he fought against the troops of the usurper Ingenuus in Moesia, in AD 258, in the victory of Mursa. This earned him great esteem with the emperor, who, shortly afterwards, entrusted him with the defence of Illyricum, against two other usurpers from the East, Macrianus Major together with his sons Macrianus Minor and Quietus (in AD 261), while Gallienus was engaged in Gaul against Postumus. In Illyria Aureolus defeated the two Macrianii, whose army came under his command. It seems that in the course of AD 267, Gallienus, thanks to the support of Aureolus, again as magister equitum, and the military expertise of his magister militum, Claudius the Gothic, successfully fought the secessionist Gallic armies of Postumus. However, when Aureulus was left by Gallienus in Mediolanum at the head of the cavalry, charged with guarding a possible arrival of Postumus in Italy, he like others, under pressure from the military who held Gallienus in contempt, proclaimed himself emperor in AD 268. He also seems to have offered his alliance to Postumus, who however preferred to remain neutral. On hearing the news that Aurelius was gathering a large army to move on Rome, Gallienus returned to Italy and forced his adversary to enclose himself within the walls of Mediolanum, after defeating him at the river Adda, in the battle of Pontirolo. While the siege was still in progress, Aureulus tried to come to terms with Gallienus (who was later killed by his generals in September 268). He then tried to come to terms with Claudius, who had become the new emperor, but it is said that he was slaughtered towards the end of AD 268 by his own officers for fear of revenge by the emperor.
