TRAJAN (98-117). Sestertius. Rome. Obv: IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC PARTHICO P M TR P COS VI P P. Laureate and draped bust right.Rev: REX PARTHIS DATVS / S C. Trajan seated left on platform, presenting Parthamaspates to kneeling Parthian; attendant standing to right of Trajan.Woytek 594v; RIC 667.The great spoils won by Trajan through the wars in Dacia and the stability of the limes enabled the empire to enjoy seven years of peace and prosperity, avoiding internal conflicts or major external threats. However, in 113 the emperor embarked on one last venture, the invasion of the Parthian empire, one of the most formidable adversaries since Julius Caesar. Trajan achieved another victory, regained control of Armenia that had been occupied by the Parthian king Osroes, and extended Roman rule to Syria and Mesopotamia. The sestertius with REX PARTHIS DATVS celebrates the coronation of Partamaspates, a Phanthian king wanted by the emperor to replace Osroes on the Parthian throne. Condition: Fair.Weight: 20.98 g. Diameter: 34 mm.
