Hercules standing right, leaning on club and holding apple and lion's skin; star to left.RIC V 3118.RareBehind the figure of Vaballatus stands the more prominent one of his mother Zenobia, who ruled the kingdom of Palmyra and decided to secede from the Roman Empire, declaring herself independent. Zenobia, who claimed to be descended from Cleopatra, first appears in sources in 258 as the second wife of Septimius Odaenathus, ruler of Palmyra. Since the heir to the throne was to be Herodianus, Odaenathus' first-born son, Zenobia instigated Meonius to kill first her husband and then her stepson. She later had Meonius executed as well and assumed the regency on behalf of her son Vaballatus, who was still an infant at the time. Given the political instability in Rome, Zenobia began to plan an autonomous kingdom that would unite different eastern populations. She conquered Arabia and Judea in a short time, then even managed to take over Egypt by taking advantage of the death of Claudius Gothicus. In 270 the queen assumed the title of Augusta and began minting coins in the name of her son Vaballatus. The new emperor Aurelian finally decided to intervene and headed east, achieving two important victories at Immae and Emesa, then laying siege to Palmyra. Zenobia relied too much on the city's food and water reserves and on the help that never arrived from the Persian king Shapur.
