Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD) with Agrippa. AE As, Nemausus mint, c. 10-14 AD. Obv. Heads of Agrippa, wearing combined rostral crown and laurel wreath, to left and Augustus, laureate, to right, back to back; IMP above, DIVI F below. Rev. Crocodile right, chained to palm tree; above, wreath with long ties; COL NEM across field. RIC I (2nd ed.) 158. AE. 5.53 g. 25.00 mm. Fascinating example, halved in antiquity. Pale green patina. Good VF. This coin type was initially minted to commemorate Augustus' establishment of the colony named Colonia Augusta Nemausus in southern Gaul in 27 BC. However, the specific coin in question is part of a revival of the 'crocodile dupondius' design, which occurred two years after Agrippa's death. It features the abbreviation P P (Pater Patriae) on the obverse, a title Augustus was only given in 2 BC, indicating that it was issued at a later date.

Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). AE 21.5 mm. Asia Minor, uncertain mint, c. 30 BC(?). Obv. Bare head right. Rev. Fiscus, sella quaestoria and hasta; Q below. RPC I 5410; AMNG 228. AE. 7.09 g. 21.50 mm. VF. This issue has previously been attributed to a Macedonian mint with the portrait identified either as Brutus (Friedlander), Caesar (Grant), or to the governor of Syria, Gaius Sosius (in the trade). RPC presents a case for an origin in northern Turkey, supported by find data, with a suggestion that the portrait is Octavian. Issues of similar portrait style, very likely by the same engraver, include the 'Princeps Felix' coinage from Cilicia (RPC 4082-3).

Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). AR Denarius. Uncertain mint, 32-29 BC. Obv. Bare head right. Rev. CAESAR DIVI F. Venus standing right, leaning against column, holding transverse spear in left and helmet in right; shield depicting eight-rayed star leans against column. RIC I (2nd ed.) 250A. AR. 3.41 g. 22.00 mm. R. Fine style portrait. A superb example of this fascinating issue. Porous metal, otherwise. good VF. Octavian exploited his descent by adoption from Caesar for his political propaganda. The term 'DIVI FILIUS', literally 'son of a god', refers to the deification that the Senate granted to the figure of Julius Caesar on 1 January 42 BC. Later, having become Augustus, Octavian stopped publicising this lineage, trying to distance himself from the cumbersome figure of his adoptive father.
