The 'Farnese' Hercules, naked, standing right, right hand on hip, and resting on club set on rock; lion skin beside club. RIC IV 95. AR. 5.17 g. 23.00 mm. A choice example. Full weight and lightly toned. Good VF. This reverse type is modelled after, or based on the same subject as, the famed marble Farnese Hercules statue that was discovered in the excavations of the Baths of Caracalla in 1546. It stood for over 200 years in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, from whence it gained its name, and was moved to Naples in 1787, where it is now displayed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. The statue is thought to be an enlarged copy sculpted in the early 3rd century AD by Glykon based on an original by Lysippos dating to the 4th century BC. The statue depicts Hercules at rest after completing his Labors: he is shown standing with his club, draped in the skin of the Nemean Lion, set upright on a rock, propped under his left arm supporting the weight of his muscular frame, his head slightly nodding forward in a weary attitude, and he holds the apples of the Hesperides behind his back in his right hand. The sculpture was apparently well-liked by the Romans, and copies have been found in Roman palaces and gymnasiums. (CNG, inv. 975456 note).

Although Paulina’s name is not mentioned by any of the ancient writers, the numismatic evidence is quite sufficient to prove that she was the wife of Maximinus I (235-238 AD) and probably the mother of the Caesar Maximus. A provincial bronze issue in her name from the Cilician mint of Anazarbus actually bears a date corresponding to the year 235/6 AD. Like her Roman issues this coin is posthumous, but it does accord her the imperial title of Augusta suggesting that she was still alive at the time of her husband's accession but died shortly afterward. The single surviving stone inscription in which she is mentioned (CIL x. 5054) gives a fuller version of her name and titles, Diva Caecilia Paulina Pia Augusta (Triton XVIII, 1183).

The legionary issues of Septimius Severus were struck at the outset of his reign, to honor the Roman legions that had supported his bid for the throne from the beginning. Legions so honored included Legio I Adiutrix, Legio I Italica, Legio I Minervia, Legio II Adiutrix, Legio II Italica, Legio III Italica, Legio IIII Flavia, Legio V Macedonica, Legio VII Claudia, Legio XI Claudia, Legio VIII Augusta, Legio XIII Gemina Marta Victrix, Legio XIIII Gemina Marta Victrix, Legio XXII Primegenia, and Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix.
