Notes
This is a monumental work of more than 1,632 large-format pages (larger than A4), which analyzes, studies, and catalogues all coin and medal issues related to the pontificate of Pius IX, a historical period of enormous importance not only for Christianity, but also for the history of Rome, Italy, and Europe as a whole.
The work clearly does not limit itself to the study of annual medals — those struck year after year as part of the series that, from the 1500s to the present day, recounts the events of the Roman Church and the major milestones in the history of Rome and the Papal States. Nor is it confined to large-format specimens, the exceptional medals produced at the new Mint of Rome. Instead, it documents over 3,000 examples, ranging from extraordinary medals of the Papal States and the Catholic Church to all productions that, in one way or another, portray Pius IX — sometimes even satirically during the revolutionary years of 1848–1849 — often produced in France, alongside those linked to the Italian Risorgimento, as well as issues struck throughout Europe and even in the United States and Latin America.
Bertuzzi’s work goes beyond other major publications in the field, such as Bartolotti’s volumes and Jean-Pierre Collignon’s studies on the political and satirical medals of the 1848–1952 period.
The photographic documentation is also of the highest quality: every specimen is accompanied by a dedicated image and a rarity rating, a feature that may also prove valuable to numismatic professionals specializing in medals.
The dies of many medals have also been examined and studied, in the same way coin dies are traditionally analyzed in numismatic research.
