This is the first time since the Platt Hall collection was offered in Glendining’s in 1950 (Byzantine section 87 lots), that a comparable collection of standard Byzantine and other related Dark Age gold coins has been offered for sale in England.
The collection of four hudred coins has been formed over many years on the basis of academic interest, rarity, style and chronology, rather than as so frequently happens in these days of ‘investment portfolios’ amassing rows of identical coins of somewhat dubious quality.
The collection is notable for its general high quality and for the number of rarities, many being the only recorded specimen of a particular class. Especially notable is the wide range of coins (many extremly rare) from the Western (Italian) mints. - Condition
