Notes
Scholars generally agree on the description of coin images, but differ in their interpretation of their meaning. Is there, however, an objective and scientific method that can overcome these differences? The author approaches coin imagery as a form of communication - a language to be analyzed using the same categories applied to the study of verbal languages ("the image as a word"). Through this approach, it becomes possible to recover its grammar and syntax, reconstruct semantic fields and domains, and trace - across time and space - the "stratigraphy" and evolution of the meanings associated with each icon. The reconstruction of the complete corpus of coin images, organized by subjects and themes by M. Caltabiano and G. Salamone, represents a fascinating exploration of the conceptual structures of ancient society. It enables the recovery of a substantial part of the collective imagery through which ideas and concepts were translated into visual form, serving above all political purposes.
