Notes
The volume, the result of collaboration between the authors and the Chair of Medieval Archaeology of the Department of Human Sciences at the University of L’Aquila, presents the first archaeological report on monetary ritual practices in the territory of L’Aquila (the ancient province of Abruzzo Ultra flumen Piscariae, 13th–18th century). The re-examination of sites and finds, approached through a multidisciplinary methodology, serves as a connecting thread between the excavation campaigns carried out in recent decades by the Department and the often fragmentary data available in the literature. The symbolic value of coins and other finds closely related to numismatics (bullae, accounting tokens, devotional medals) has made it possible to identify four ritual contexts, shaped by social events and often influenced by the cyclical and destructive impact of earthquakes: 1. The “foundation rite” in religious buildings; 2. The silver donated for the bell of the Abbey of St. Lucia in Rocca di Cambio — ritual or founders’ fraud?; 3. The “coins in tombs” phenomenon — from ritual to funerary tradition; 4. A unique case: the coins found within the mummified body of Blessed Jean Bassand.
