Notes
Latella’s work differs substantially from traditional catalogues of Roman numismatics by introducing a new narrative model in which coins are placed in relation to the events that characterized the Flavian dynasty. Through numismatic evidence, the Roman Empire is examined with historical rigor even before the rise of Vespasian: the pacification following the Year of the Four Emperors, the East with the Jewish War, and the rebirth of the state, including the consolidation of imperial power through the principle of dynastic succession. The author also discusses architecture and imperial propaganda. Particular attention is given to the succession of public offices inherited from the republican system that Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian held, following a practice already established under Augustus. An extensive set of illustrations clearly demonstrates the medium through which the story is revealed: the coin. Although the work has a strong historical and economic approach, it also includes important strictly numismatic aspects, such as the publication of coins that had previously been unpublished. The work was presented by the historian Davide Franco Jabes and the numismatist Umberto Moruzzi.
