The first part of the book examines, in remarkable depth, the historical context, spanning from the establishment of the Spanish enclave in the 16th century to the reign of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. Individual issues are treated in a highly detailed manner and organized year by year, exploring the specifics of each individual coinage.
The State of the Presidi (1557–1801) was a unique and unrepeatable political entity in the historical landscape of Italy. Established by Philip II of Spain to provide a secure harbor for Spanish ships, it comprised the Maremma communities of Orbetello, Porto Ercole, Porto Santo Stefano, Talamone and, from 1603 onward, Longone on Elba Island. For nearly two hundred and fifty years, it followed the fortunes first of the Spanish Crown and later of the Kingdom of Naples, until its annexation into the Napoleonic Kingdom of Etruria.
Border territories between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal States, military and commercial ports alike, the fortresses of the Presìdi saw the passage of Italian and foreign merchants and goods, while coins and currencies of every kind circulated within them. Only in 1782, during the reign of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon in Naples, was it decided to issue a copper coinage series — in denominations of four, two, and one quattrino — specifically intended for circulation in the Royal Presidi of Tuscany.
Eight years after the publication of I quattrini dei Reali Presìdi di Toscana, the author presents a new expanded and enriched edition, both in its historical and numismatic sections. Following a broad historical overview retracing the origins, major military events, and the social, political, and economic framework of the State of the Presidi, the book examines in detail the strictly numismatic aspects: monetary circulation and the issue surrounding the minting of the “quattrini.” The reasons behind their issuance are explored, typological, iconographic, and die varieties are analyzed in depth, overstruck specimens are illustrated, and classifications in historical sources and numismatic literature are reviewed. The work concludes with a completely updated catalogue listing rarity ratings, valuations, and major auction appearances for each variety. All of this is complemented by an extensive iconographic section featuring the finest known specimens and those recorded in auctions to date. An appendix presents a hypothesis concerning the mintages issued, based on archival research and documents consulted and reproduced within the volume.
Accompanied by introductions from two of the leading scholars of Neapolitan and Tuscan coinage, Davide Fabrizi and Alessio Montagano, the volume — elegantly bound in hardcover and perhaps marking the conclusion of the author’s long course of study and research into this coinage — establishes itself as an essential reference work for collectors and enthusiasts of Neapolitan and Tuscan numismatics, standing alongside the most authoritative standard references in the field. - Condition
