The Tiberina Academy was founded in 1813 following a split from the Hellenic Academy, which had been established in 1809 by archaeologist Antonio Nibby to promote the study of the Greek language. Due to unresolved internal conflicts, the Academy’s leader, archaeologist and historian Antonio Coppi, along with twenty-five other members - including Giuseppe Gioachino Belli - decided to leave and create a new institution: the Tiberina Academy. Coppi, its first president, drafted the founding charter, which outlined its mission to promote classical and Italian language studies (with a purist approach), support agricultural development in the Roman countryside, and compile a history of medieval Rome.
