Lotto n. 286 - Magna Graecia (?), circa 4th - 3rd centuries BC. Seal or Brooch (Lead, 26.47 mm, 7.54 g). Helmeted head of Athena facing, surmounted by owl (?); on right, Nike standing left, crowing Athena. Rev. An arch formed by palm branches, enclosing dolphins. Rostovtsev -. Overbeck -. Turcan -. Arzone, Marinello -. Baratta -. Dark patina. About Extremely Fine. For similar specimens Cf. Bertolami, E-78, lot 440 and Bertolami, E-38, lot 158. Good Fine. Very Rare and intriguing piece, retaining traces of the original iron pin on the reverse. Possibly a brooch linked to a religious cult dedicated to Athena.

Lotto n. 287 - Roman, circa 1st century BC. Tessera (Lead, 19.32 mm, 4.08 g). Eight-petalled rosette. Rev. Dolphin right, with a shaft below (?); above, VI. Overbeck 196. Rostovtsev 2939 var. (without numeral). Excellent preservation for the type: Good Extremely Fine. Rare. If the dolphin represents a military standard, the numeral VI could refer to the Legio VI Victrix, founded by Octavian, which—among other things—fought in Sicily against Sextus Pompey and at Actium against Mark Antony.
