Junius Brutus, one of the leaders in the conspiracy that assassinated Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The types are records of his ancestry. Lucius Junius Brutus was a semilegendary figure, held to have ousted the despotic Etruscan king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus from Rome in 509 BC and then to have founded the Roman Republic. Gaius Servilius Ahala was celebrated in Roman tradition as a hero who freed his country from the threat of tyranny by killing Sp. Maelius in 439 BC.

A rare type featuring a portrait of refined and elegant style. Good example, struck on broad flan. Gash and mark nick on obverse. Good VF/About EF. Aulus Hirtius, praetor at the time this coin was struck, was a close friend of both Cicero and Caesar, and had served as the latter’s legate in Gaul. He was consul in 43 BC, having been nominated by Caesar, and was sent along with Octavian and Pansa against Antony, who was besieging Decimus Brutus at Mutina. Hirtius defeated Antony but fell while leading the assault on his camp. Hirtius is credited with completing Caesar’s commentaries on the Gallic, Alexandrine, African, and Spanish wars. (Triton XXI, 661 note).

Well centred and good example of this fascinating issue. Peripheral areas of weak strike. About EF. The reverse depicts the legendary foundation of Lanuvium. As Aeneas and his Trojan followers were engaged in constructing the city, they saw a blaze in a nearby wood. The fire was kindled by a she-wolf feeding branches onto a brazier, while an eagle fanned the flames with its wings. According to the tradition, a fox (not shown here) attempted in vain to put out the fire by dipping its tail into a stream, but was driven away by the wolf and the eagle. From this, Aeneas understood that the new settlement would gain renown, though it would face the envy of its neighbours—yet ultimately it would triumph.

The Rostra is the name of the great speaker's platform in the Forum, from which speakers addressed crowds, and from this platform many of the great and famous speeches in Roman history were delivered. Initially, it was constructed as a flat-topped platform (suggestus) forming part of the large, round Comitium (an area in front of the Curia where speakers would address the whoever was assembled). Typically, a speaker's platform is called a tribunal, but after Duilius won Rome's first major naval victory against Antium in 338 BCE, six bronze prows of enemy ships were attached to the front of the speaker's platform as trophies; the Latin for prows is rostra, and the name became used for the entire structure. In 260 BCE, C. Duilius Nepos defeated the Carthagians at Mylae, and replaced or supplemented the original prows with new ones from ships captured in that battle. Eventually, decorative prows that were not from actual ships were specially constructed for the platform itself.
