For centuries, numismatists have been puzzled by a curious series of bronze tokens bearing on their reverse numerals from I to XVI. The obverse types on these tokens vary dramatically, bearing not only portraits of Augustus, Tiberius, and Livia, but also various erotic scenes, heterosexual and (possibly) homosexual, or bigas, maenads, capricorns, and other scattered mythological figures. The most prominent theories suggest that they were tickets for entrance to the theater or the games, and the numerals represented sections in the stands, or that they were brothel tokens, with the obverse representing a chosen “product” and the reverse the price. However, both of these theories seem unlikely when one considers that the two seemingly divergent themes are joined by die links to the numeral reverses.(CNG 403785 note).

This Dupondius, one of the most famous architectural types in 1st century coinage, shows us the facade of the Macellum Magnum, the great marketplace built by Nero on the Caelian Hill, the work of architects Severus and Celer, completed in 59 AD. The monumental two-story building, topped by a dome just slightly smaller than that of the Pantheon, was the largest commercial center in the Roman world and housed an abattoir, outlets selling live and slaughtered livestock, fish, basic necessities and luxury goods, tabernae, bankers' and money changers' stores as well as a votive shrine dedicated to Ceres. Its location seems to correspond to that of the church of St. Stephen Rotundus, which would have been erected on the remains of its foundations by Pope Simplicius in the second half of the 5th century.

Disdaining the more philosophic inclinations of his father, Commodus was extremely proud of his physical prowess. He ordered many statues to be made showing him dressed as Hercules with a lion's hide and a club. He thought of himself as the reincarnation of Hercules, frequently emulating the legendary hero's feats by appearing in the arena to fight a variety of wild animals. Moreover, as Hercules, he could claim to be the son of Jupiter, the supreme god of the Roman pantheon. These tendencies increased to megalomaniacal proportions.
