Apparently only the fourth known example of this great rarity, and the first offered at auction since Hess-Divo Auction 324, lot 129, 23 October 2013, hammered CHF 2,200. A superb specimen of excellent style, with wonderful old cabinet toning. This rare argenteus, issued at Lugdunum in the closing years of Valentinian II's reign, bears the vota formula VOT XV MVLT XX, marking vows for the emperor's fifteenth anniversary and hopes for a twentieth. Very rare and highly sought-after, often missing from collections. Flavius Victor was the young son of Magnus Maximus, elevated to Augustus in the West during his father's brief breakaway regime. His coinage is short-lived, struck in the tense years just before Theodosius I moved against Maximus, and it remains a scarce witness to this fleeting chapter of late Roman politics. Superb aEF, with old cabinet grey toning and light iridescence. An amazing coin, missing from most collections. For the most recent example in similar condition see; Classical Numismatic Group Auction 129, lot 581, 13 May 2025, hammered USD 5,500. For another recent example see; Kunker Auction 438, lot 842, 16 March 2026, hammered EUR 550, and clearly far inferior to the present superb specimen. Eugenius' coinage is remarkable for its strongly individualised portraiture, a feature not seen on imperial issues since the reign of Julian II some thirty years earlier. Like Julian, he is depicted with a full beard, an intentional reference to the philosopher's image of classical tradition. Although outwardly Christian, this appearance was readily interpreted as a sign of sympathy toward the pagan aristocracy of Rome, whose standing had greatly diminished under the rigorously Catholic rule of Theodosius I in the East. Seeking to secure support in the West, Eugenius appears to have made calculated gestures toward the adherents of the old religion, who received him with enthusiasm. In the end, however, this alignment gave Theodosius the justification he required to invade Italy and extinguish the usurpation.Estimate: AUD 1500

Rare. aVF for this very difficult type. One interpretation states that the upside-down candlestick resembles the dome of a mosque. This may be the case, but the question remains: why would the Umayyads not simply depict the full image of a mosque, such as the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem? Also, if read in that way, the text would be upside down and not easily readable, which seems unusual. The alternative interpretation, identifying the object as a Jewish menorah, appears more convincing, especially as other very rare types also depict a seven-branched candlestick. It is not surprising that early Muslims in Jerusalem might have accepted a Jewish symbol on a coin, as Jews also believe in the Oneness of God and are considered People of the Book, like Christians. The symbol could also be understood in an Islamic context, for example as an allusion to the five pillars of Islam or the seven heavens mentioned in the Quran. It is also important to note that, after nearly 500 years of exile and oppression under the Roman and Byzantine empires, Jews were allowed back into Jerusalem when the second caliph, Umar I, took the city in A.D. 637/38. It is therefore possible that, in a community where Jews had returned, the early Umayyads could have issued coins bearing a Jewish symbol. Another interpretation sees this as an unusual figural bronze struck in Jerusalem by the new Islamic rulers, with a clearly Jewish motif. The type was early identified as a menorah, although Barag noted that only one rare variety shows a true menorah with seven arms and a flat base. The object on this piece may instead resemble the Omer offering cup depicted on the silver coins of the First Jewish War, with a rounded bowl, ribbed rather than plain, a knobbed stem, and a footed base. It is possible that two different objects are represented, both connected with Jewish Temple ritual. The Jewish inhabitants of the new Arab province of Bilad al-Sham, Palestine, appear to have coexisted reasonably well with their new Islamic rulers, sharing a common opposition to the Christian Byzantine Empire. The early Umayyad caliphs were evidently willing to permit the expression of Jewish religious symbolism.
