Ptolemaic Kings of Egypt. Ptolemy VI Philometor and Ptolemy VIII Evergetes II (Physcon), 170-163 BC. Diobol - coregency issue. Alexandria. Circa 170-163 BC (Bronze, 30.95 mm, 23.48 g). Diademed head of Zeus Ammon right. Rev. [ΠΤΟ]ΛΕΜΑΙΟY - ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, Two jugate eagles standing left on thunderbolt; on left, cornucopia. Svoronos 1424 (Joint reign of Ptolemy VI and VIII). Weiser 142 (Ptolemy V). SNG Copenhagen 308-310 (Joint reign of Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII). Noeske 212-5 (Joint reign of Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII). Lorber & Faucher Series 7C. Attractive brown patina. Superb portrait on obverse. Extremely Fine. From the Giovanni Maria Staffieri Collection; privately purchased from Numismatica Aretusa SA - Franco Chiesa, Lugano, in October 1982. From the pen of G.M.S.: Alexandrian Ptolemaic bronzes, particularly those struck during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC in the highest denominations, were not only a means of exchange but also a testament to Egypt's political power and economic opulence. The obverse typically features the image of Zeus Ammon, the dynasty's favored deity, which is particularly striking on well-preserved specimens such as ours.
