Another drachm of exceptional artistic value, formerly in the collection of Giovanni Datari, belonging to the best stylistic series of the ‘Labours of Heracles’ issued by the mint of Alexandria during the reign of Antoninus Pius, and the most ingenious of the two scenes dedicated to the representation of Heracles' first toil: the violent hand-to-hand combat with the Nemean lion, which could not be killed with weapons because it had invulnerable skin. The hero forced him into his den, tried unsuccessfully to wound him with arrows and stun him with his club, and finally smothered him with the grip of his steel arms as depicted on the coin.
