Lot # 276
Egypt, Alexandria. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Drachm (Bronze, 33.31 mm, 23.58 g). Dated RY 17 = AD 153/4. VT K T(A)I(Λ) AΔP ANTωΝIΝΟϹ CЄB ЄY(C) Laureate-headed bust of Antoninus Pius wearing paludamentum left. Rev. Draped bust of Ammon right, crowned with disk; L IZ (date) across field. Dattari 2942. Emmett 1700. RPC IV, 4.1515.11 (this coin cited). Good Very Fine. Ex Numismatica Aretusa (Franco Chiesa), 1978. An uncommon drachm of Antoninus Pius in the twilight of his reign, with on the obverse the laureate bust facing surprisingly to the left instead of regularly to the right. Majestic and statuesque on the reverse is the head of Zeus Ammon with an orb on his head, suggesting syncretism with Kronos or the Egyptian solar deity Ra. Very well centred and well minted specimen on both sides, minimally circulated and with a fascinating original brick red ‘desert’ patina.
