Ex Numismatik Naumann Gmbh., Auction 113, 06.02.2022, lot 564.
A curious and very rare drachm of Marcus Aurelius entirely immersed in an original brick red ‘desert’ patina that gives it a particular charm. Very interesting and unusual is the depiction on the reverse of a large triumphal throne empty but with a kalathos resting on the seat. This element suggests the throne's reference to Zeus Serapis, although it is not possible to explain the absence of the deity normally seated there, unless it is related to a specific liturgical rite.
