Lot # 293
Egypt, Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius 161-180. Hemidrachm (Bronze, 30.00 mm, 15.80 g). Dated RY 6 = AD 165/6. M AYPH ANΤωNIN CЄ Radiate head of Marcus Aurelius right. Rev. ЄYΘH NIA Draped bust of Euthenia wearing stephane right; before to right, cornucopia; L Ϛ (date) in field. RPC IV.4.2958 (this coin cited). Cf. Good Very Fine. Ex Frank L. Kovacs, 29.06.1997, lot 49. Only two specimens, of this beautiful hemidrachm, are so far known but, of different mintage, so they are both unique pieces belonging to my collection and so have been described in RPC IV.4 as Staffieri 1 (sold at the Triton XXI auction of 09/01/2018, lot no. 272) and Staffieri 2, the one described here, and also referred to as Staffieri no. 53b in the catalogue joined to my article ‘The radiated crown on the portraits of the Alexandrian imperial bronzes’ in NAC 2013, pp. 121 144. The portrait of Marcus Aurelius on the obverse with the exceptional radiate crown is of remarkable artistic quality, with statuesque depth; a majestic figure, more like a philosopher (which he also was) than a ruler.
