During Commodus' reign, with a few rare exceptions, the tetradrachms lost all silver content and appear to have been minted in bronze or copper. However, this rare specimen is positively highlighted both by its good conservation and by the original crystalline black patina, where the images stand out from the light sandy deposits in the background. On the reverse, in addition to the majestic enthroned Roman Zeus, the indication of the emperor's fourth consulship (= 183 AD) stands out in the legend.
